Artist Statement

Shankar Adiseshan, an artist, invites you to delve into a world where memory, imagination, stillness, and movement converge to redefine the way we perceive the familiar. In Shankar’s artistic practice, every photograph is a reflection or a unique point of view, offering a fresh perspective that breathes new life into the ordinary.

Memory, a cornerstone of his work, weaves the threads of time, emotion, and experience into each image. Through his work, memories emerge, taking on a tangible form that encourages contemplation and introspection. The duality of stillness and movement is an element of Shankar’s compositions. These seemingly opposing forces find harmony within his frames, capturing moments that exist in both tranquility and action. Through this harmonious juxtaposition, Shankar challenges traditional perceptions.

Shankar’s ultimate aim is to create a unified visual experience. He accomplishes this through the fusion of technique, and keen observation. His work establishes a profound connection between the real and the imagined, the known and the unknown, beckoning viewers to journey beyond the surface and explore the depths of their own emotions and memories.

Bio

Shankar Adiseshan born in India is a Canadian artist known for his captivating exploration of abstract photography, utilizing intricate camera techniques such as multiple exposure and long exposure to craft evocative imagery. His work transcends the realm of traditional photography, focusing on the interpretation of emotions rather than merely documenting subjects.

Although Shankar is entirely self-taught, his artistic journey began with a profound early influence from his mother, who possessed an exceptional sense of colour and created exquisite art objects with practical uses, such as jewellery, handbags, necklaces, and bangles. Her creativity and artistic prowess motivated Shankar to embark on a path of drawing and painting.

While Shankar’s initial exposure to the world of art came through his mother’s influence, his formal learning process commenced much later in life, through frequent visits to art galleries and in-depth studies of abstract painters. After several years as an advertising and editorial photographer, he made a conscious decision to shift his focus to photography as a means of artistic expression.
